Aizawl, Sept 3: Asking the local farmers to go more for organic farming, Parliamentary Secretary Lt.Col.Z.S Zuala today said that vegetables and rice that are free from chemicals are much healthier and about ten times profitable. So the farmers should go for organic farming more and more, he said.
He also, referring to Agricultural Scientist, said the excessive use of pesticides by the local farmers can cause deadly diseases like cancer and asked the farmers to be careful in this regard. KVK scientists have high responsibility to help the farmers, he added.
Parliamentary Secretary Lt.Col.Z.S Zuala was addressing the Review Meeting on the initiatives of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) under Directorate of Agriculture (Research & Education) in Mizoram.
Agriculture Minister R.Lalzirliana, who graced the Review Meeting which was held at Agriculture Conference Hall here, said that high yielding CAUR variety of rice which has been experimented since 2011 has been introduced after successful findings on its good quality.
Delivering Keynote address, Director, Agriculture (R&E) Lalrinliana on the other said that Rs. 680 lakhs is estimated for 2015-2016 Annual Action Plan of KVK and the same has been submitted to the central government on August 25 last.
Various CSS – Post Harvest Technology Management, Seed Village Programme and NFSM are also being carried out, he said.
The review meeting learnt that Rs. 50 lakhs has been received from Govt. of India for implementation of National Mission on Oil Seeds and Oil Palm for this year, and plan has been made to carry out new scheme Sub-Mission on Seeds and Planting Materials.
KVK has registered 69 different indigenous good quality rice and other crops.
Hnahthial KVK had represented Mizoram at the National Seminar on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act programme in July, 2015 and was adjudged the third position at the national level exhibition.
