Aizawl, Dec 4: Of the registered 475 homosexual or ‘Man having Sex with Man’ (MSM) , 0.90 percent tested HIV positive, State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) leaders revealed during a workshop on sensitization of transgender and homosexuals and their vulnerability in the society.
A study by MSACS revealed that there are registered 430 MSM living in Aizawl and 45 in Lunglei of whom 0.90 percent are infected with HIV positive. “The actual number of MSM in Mizoram may vary as many people having the psychological sexual attraction are reluctant to confess themselves,” MSACS leader said, adding people with psychological sexual attraction to their same sex should not be ostracized or simply treated with contempt but should be treated with love and care.
The number of HIV patient among the MSM is gradually increasing and therefore an immediate measure is necessary to prevent this deadly from fast spreading among them which can only be achieved by finding out them and hence give counseling and treatment, according to MSACS leaders.
Workshop on transgender and ‘same sex love’ was today organized for media persons by MSACS in association with the Humsafar Trust and Project Diva.
Dinesh, an advocacy officer from project Diva in his presentation talked about the components of human sexuality. According to him there are five components of sexuality such as- biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, social role and sex role.
He said that scientific research of over the past 35 years shows that homosexual orientation, by itself is not associated with emotional problems. However this sexual orientation is still beyond societal acceptance and section 377 of the IPC criminalize homosexual.
Therefore awareness should be created among the masses to give care and love to the homosexuals as they have been often ostracized due to their social stigma.
According to Dinesh, the community of transgender and homosexual faces various issues like living double lives, pretending to be heterosexual, society pressure for forced marriage, marital discord and unhappiness, open for blackmail, exploited financially and sexually, discrimination in jobs, suicidal intention. This community afraid that they will be ridiculed and harassed. Therefore it is necessary that this people who are vulnerable to HIV positive be treated with love and care, he added.
