Aizawl, Feb 9: Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today sent message to the people of the State on the occasion of Fire Prevention Week which begins tomorrow across the State.
CM called on the people to not cause wildfire in forest areas other than slashed for shifting cultivation. He reminded the people to stick to the time set by the government for burning of forest for shifting cultivation or jhum, adding that the negligence in the same regard is known to cause wildfire in large area of forest.
It is unfortunate that large area green forest got burnt up due to carelessness and disobeying of the instruction given by the government, Chief Minister emphatically said in his message.
The habits of throwing cigarette ends while still it burns, setting fire on the bushes on the wayside, leaving behind fire unextinguished-all have to be done away with, he added.
Lamenting the great loss of large area of forest, CM said that large area of green forest left now are those of ‘wildlife sanctuaries’ and ‘community reserves’.
More and more awareness on the importance of forest conservation and concerted effort to make green forest are the need of the hour to tackle rapid ‘climate change’ in the world, he added. Underlining the need of sustainable development, Chief Minister called on each and every individual in the State-from the youngest to the eldest, to take the responsibility of fire prevention so as to make beautiful Mizoram.
