Aizawl, Oct 30: General elections to the 19-ward Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 25-member Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) will be held simultaneously on November 26, State Election Commissioner L Tochhong today said.
Announcing the poll date in the presence of media and government officials, Tochhong said that election to AMC and LADC will be held simultaneously on the scheduled date from 7 am to 4 pm and the date for re-poll if required will be held on 27 November from 7 am to 4 pm.
The Election Model Code of Conduct was in placed from today in the jurisdiction of the AMC and the LADC area in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, she added.
While polling for AMC would be conducted with ballot papers, EVM would be used in LADC poll.
Tochhong said that the state election commission’s notification for general election to AMC and LADC would be issued by each returning officer on 31 October.
As for AMC polls, the last date for filing nominations is fixed on November six and last date for withdrawal of candidature is on November nine. Scrutiny of nomination papers would be held on 7 November and counting of votes would be undertaken right after the completion of polling on November 26.
Under AMC there are 19 wards of which six are reserved for women. There are 211 polling stations and 1,92,382 voters in AMC area of which 9,0287 are male and 1,02095 are female. For smooth conduct of the election the state election commission has arranged 19 Returning officers, 19 assistant Returning officers, 211 presiding officers and 422 polling officers, Tochhong said. For the LADC polls, the last date for filing nominations is November five (till 3 pm) and last date for withdrawal of candidature is fixed on November nine. Scrutiny of nomination papers would be held during 3 days on 6, 7 and 9 November and counting of votes would be held in Lawngtlai town on November 28.
The electorate of 45,757 including 23,279 women voters would exercise franchise in 103 polling stations where polling would be conducted with EVM. The State Election Commission has sanctioned Rs 1 lakh each for expense of candidate.
The State Election Commission has meanwhile asked all voters, polling officials, political parties and NGOs to extend support to the government for free and fair election.
