Aizawl, Feb 14: As in other years, Association for Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD) on Saturday organized Blood Donation camp on the occasion of Valentine’s Day here under the name of ‘Blood for Your Valentine’. The same, organized at Aizawl Civil Hospital Auditorium, was graced by State Health & Family Welfare Minister Lal Thanzara.
Speaking at the inaugural function of ‘Blood for Your Valentine’, Health Minister Lal Thanzara said that Mizoram may be the first to use Valentine’s Day as an occasion for voluntary Blood Donation, adding, “Mizoram sets an important milestone for India in Blood Donation”.
He lauded Zikpuii and AVBD leaders who have come out with such a good idea, and also thanked all the donors as well as contributors to make the programme a successful one. The Minister said that Mizoram has seen a great progress regarding voluntary blood donation since 1992, adding that the most important role is played by none other than the donors.
Mizoram is fortunate to have NGOs, Churches, Students, and NSS Volunteers who more and more come forward for voluntary blood donation, the Minister.
In the meantime, the Minister called for more blood donation given the increasing need of blood corresponding to the increase of population and mentioned that Mizoram needs 23,000 units of blood in a year.
As per report given on the occasion by AVBD General Secretary C. Lalnunnema, so far 3368 units of blood have been donated under ‘Blood for Your Valentine’ programme.
AVBD awarded citations to regular donors- more than 50 times in male category and more than 40 times in female category.
In the male category, C. Lalremruata who have donated his blood 60 times and R.C. Rokhum who have donated his blood 58 times were awarded citation while in female category, popular Mizo singer Rebecca Saimawii who have donated her blood 44 times and Zothantluangi who have donated her blood 41 times were awarded the same.
‘Blood for Your Valentine’ programme, organized by Zikpuii, was started in 2010 at Aizawl Civil Hospital Blood Bank. Since then, the programme has been organized every year.
