Aizawl, Nov 24: Former health minister Lal Thanzara of the ruling Congress was on Tuesday declared elected in the bypoll to the assembly seat he vacated after resigning as a minister and a legislator inflicting a crushing defeat on his two opponents- K. Vanlalvena of Mizo National Front (MNF) and Lalduhoma of National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Lal Thanzara has swept the Aizawl North-III bypoll with a thumping majority defeating his nearest opponent K. Vanlalvena by a strong margin 3,385 votes.
Counting of votes for the bye-election to 12-Aizawl North-III assembly seat was held on Tuesday at Assembly Annexe building from 8 am. While the ruling Congress candidate Lal Thanzara scored 6,175 votes followed by Vanlalvena who bagged 2,790 votes, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Lalduhawma managed to get 1,887 votes. There were 64 votes at NOTA.
The margin of vote secured by Lal Thanzara against the total number of votes secured by his two opponents- Mizo National Front candidate K Vanlalvena and NDA nominee Lalduhawma was 1,498.
Celebrating his victory at Congress Bhavan a few minutes after the declaration of bypoll results, Lal Thanzara thanked the almighty God and the people who helped and lent support to him.
He also thanked opposition party, Scroll.in and a social activist from Australia for which he said was waking up Congress from deep slumber.
“I thanked Scroll.in, MNF legal board, MNYF and an activist from Australia for making this appreciating environment as these groups has awaken Congress from its deep slumber before bypoll,” he said. He added that God gave him sincere people who extended sympathy and compassion to him due to the allegation of offences buy gabapentin reddit which was totally leveled on false or baseless ground. The bye-election to 12-Aizawl North-III assembly constituency was necessitated by the resignation of Lal Thanzara as a legislator and health minister on August 18 last over allegations of ‘conflict of interests’.
Based on the reports surfaced in a online portal news- Scroll.in, Lal Thanzara, who is also the younger brother of chief minister Lal Thanhawla was alleged of holding 21.6 percent share in Sunshine Overseas, a Delhi based construction company which bagged crores of rupees worth road construction works under the state government.
Lal Thanzara was also alleged of supplying crores of rupees worth nutrition items to the state Social Welfare department through his owned company HP Food Products while being Parliamentary Secretary and a minister of state.
Taking cognizance of the turmoil and vulnerability of the situation, Lal Thanzara had resigned from the cabinet as well as a legislator on 18 August.
Justifying his resignation, Lal Thanzara had said that he decided to step down from the cabinet as well as quit as a legislator because the charges against him, though baseless and false, may cause embarrassment to his personal dignity and the party.
“Although I have clarified my stand over the issue contrary to what has been alleged, I feel that the situation has become somewhat untenable in order to preserve my morals and dignity as well as that of the Congress party, and I am convinced that I must leave the post of Minister of State”, he had said.
