Aizawl, Oct 2: As in other parts of India and across the world, the 146th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated with enthusiasm in Mizoram today.
Governor Lt Gen (Rtd) Nirbhay Sharma, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, Speaker Hiphei, Council of Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and other top officials of paid tribute to the Father of the Nation by laying wreathes in front of his statue at Zodin Canteen Square here in Aizawl.
Besides in Aizawl, a programme in fond remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi was held in other parts of the State too.
Along with the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti also commenced Cleanliness Week across the State under the initiative of UD&PA Department.
Speaking on the occasion of Cleanliness Week kick off, Governor said that the relation between Swatchh Bharat and Gandhi began had already begun when he was in South Africa. Taking the lead to make India a clean nation, he himself practised what he taught others, the Governor said in praise of Gandhi.
Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan is to be carried out inclusive of every people, the Governor said.
Mizoram can take steps to be number one not only in cleanliness but in different areas of progress too, the Governor added.
Saying what one can do by himself should not be kept for others, the Governor called on the people of Mizoram to make a polythene bags-free State.
Also speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister said that it was before Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated ‘Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan’, that Mizoram had already started Cleanliness Week in 1997. He reminded the people the target of Swatchh Bharat Mission which is to make India a clean nation by 2019 when the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi would be celebrated.
Mizoram is considered open defecation free, Chief Minister said. He mentioned that Aizawl has been adjudged the 35th rank among the selected 476 clean cities in India. With vigorous effort, Mizoram can hold the first rank, CM said.
In Mizoram, Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan is carried out by UD&PA department in urban areas while in rural areas it is carried out by PHE department.
