Aizawl, Sept 22: In an important breakthrough, Mizoram Police has on Monday midnight arrested two Hmar People’s Convention Democrats (HPC-D) militants at Hmarkhawlien, a small town in Cachar district of Assam inhabited by the Hmar tribe, police sources said today.
The two HPC (D) militants identified as self-styled sergeant Lalchuailova (36) alias LC Hmar and self-styled Private Reuben Lalromawia (19) are allegedly said to have taken part in the Zokhawthiang ambush of MLA convoy on 28 March this years. They are also believed to be the bodyguard of Lalbiakliana alias Biaka Hmar, the commander in Zokhawthiang ambush.
Acting on the information received, Mizoram police had on Monday around midnight conducted sudden raid at Hmarkhawlien, a small town in Assam- Manipur border which is known to be used by the Hmar militant as resting place or hideout. 2 militants and 4 civilians including a 68-year old H Lala, the father of self styled commander Lalbiakliana were arrested during the raid. But the civilians except H Lala were later released by police. A 68-year old H Lala who has been accused of aiding the militant group in recruitment process has been detained along with the two HPC (D) militants, police said on Tuesday.
Police sources also said that a self-styled sergeant Lalchuailo was the commander of the militant in an ambush of a police outpost at Khawlian village, Mizoram, earlier this year and he has been involved in several extortion operations.
The arrested militants with their aide were brought to Aizawl today and police remand is being sought from the magistrate for more interrogation, police sources said.
