Aizawl, Jan 31: A programme on the project REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) organized jointly by Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education (ICFRE), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal and German Society for International Cooperation, Germany (GIZ) was held here in Aizawl the last 2 days. The main target of REDD+ project being to reduce CO2 and Mizoram is one among the Indian States selected for carrying out the same.
A workshop was held at Aijal Club in in the first day of the REDD+ programme on Thursday which was graced by Lalrinmawia Ralte, Hon’ble Minister, E&F, as Chief Guest. The workshop was attended by good number of forest officers and a number of scientists from India, Gemany and Nepal.
The second day of the programme, Friday was used for field visit of the proposed project site at Reiek. A discussion on the project was held with the villagers of Reiek and Ailawng.
The villagers agreed to the plan of carrying out various agriculture activities under the project and to also give vast tract of land for cultivation, especially of bamboo.
