Aizawl, Feb 8: New rate of Motor Vehicle Tax and Passengers & Goods Tax as per direction of the 35th Central Government Transport Development Council meeting has come into effect from today. As per the new rate, all Private vehicles (Non-Transport Vehicles) and Autorickshaw, taxi and maxicab shall need to pay at least 6% of the price of the vehicle (Before calculating VAT) for life-time tax (15 years).
Transport Department made a release today regarding the new tax rate saying the department is now ready to levy the new Vehicle tax rate and the same has come into effect from February 8, 2016.
The release of the department mentions that the new tax structure and new rate has been notified to all the States and the latter are implementing it, adding that each State Government has to make amendment in their respective State Motor Vehicles Taxation Act and Rules, and the same need to be passed by State Legislative Assembly.
As such Mizoram government has also amended Mizoram Motor Vehicles (Taxation) Act, 1996 and the Mizoram Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2015 was passed by 7th Legislative Assembly in its 6th Session, the release states.
The Notification has been issued in the Gazette but not immediately use as it took time to incorporate Computer software following the direction of Central government to computerize the process of levying all vehicle taxes.
The new tax rate is said to boost government revenue.
Along with the new tax rate, other businesses: Agent Licence, Rent a cab scheme and Carriage by Road Act 2007 and Rules 2011 are also to be implemented through computerization.
And also, All Mizoram Permit shall not be given anymore to taxis. Instead, Special Road Permit shall be given to local taxi as per necessity.
All Mizoram Maxicab Permit shall also be done away with and in place of it Permit for service route shall be given, the department release in the day said.
