Aizawl, Dec 3: One person was killed and other injured as bridge over river Tlawng located about 30 km away from Aizawl collapsed on Wednesday.
Police said that a 200 feet long bailey bridge between Sihhmui and Lengpui which linked Aizawl to Mizoram’s lone Lengpui Airport collapsed when a heavy loaded truck passed on it. A 21-year-old F. Lalremsanga of Champhai Bethel locality, the handyman of a heavy dumper truck, died on the spot while the driver Lalrammawia (20) suffered injury.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on Wednesday while the dumper truck loaded with stone chips was crossing the bridge. The driver was admitted to Aizawl hospital after he was taken out of the truck which fell into the river after the incident. However, he was declared out or critical.
The dead body of F. Lalremsanga was dispatched to his home in Champhai town after postmortem at Sairang PHC.
With the incident yesterday, the bailey bridge over Tlawng river which is located between Sihhmui and Lengpui on NH 44 -A had collapsed 3 times within 14 months. It had first collapsed on October 31 last year and again on December 8.
Meanwhile, the state Public Work Department (PWD) has expressed regret for the tragic incident and condoled the deceased and injured persons.
Government official statement said that the bailey bridge which has only 15.5 ton load capacity allegedly collapsed due to overweight when a heavy dumper truck cross it.
Signboard indicating the capacity of the bridge has also been displayed on each side of the bridge, the official statement added.
Although the weight of the dumper truck could not be exactly determined as the entire loaded materials fell into the river, it could have weighted about 22 tons even if it was half loaded as the weight of truck body itself was 8.64 ton heavy, the official statement alleged.
Government statement also said that the construction of a permanent bridge to replace the bailey bridge is underway under Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
The construction of permanent bridge which started in 2009 by a Kolkata based M/S Tantia construction Ltd was said to be completed in 2011. But it could not be done so till date as one of the resting foundation stone was found not solid.
